On Wednesday evening 32 cyclists signed on to compete for the Tommy White Trophy. Banbridge CC hosted the 10 Mile open TT at Warrenpoint. As the cyclists were assembling the warm sunshine disappeared as squally showers descended from the Cooley mountains.
We were pleased to see clubs from across the country represented as well as our own local clubs. As the riders started off down the carriageway, the rain wasn’t taking time to come down but they battled on down to the roundabout and back up the road to the finish.
As they started returning the rain was easing of, with quite a few still out there the excitement was beginning to mount as the finishing times were filtering through.
It was becoming evident the fastest man of the evening was Lindsay Watson from Powerhouse Sport with a time of 20.07, great ride from Lindsay. In 2nd place was West Down Wheeler’s Paul Wilkinson with a time of 21.05 much to the delight of his mum Barbara who was there with the trophy of her much loved brother Tommy White. In 3rd place was Des Woods, Newry Wheelers, with a time of 21.09.
Despite the weather was a good night racing and it was great to see Barbara and Bertie Wilkinson at the event and there was a lovely tribute paid to Tommy before the prize giving by Barbara’s son Paul.
A massive thanks to all the volunteers of marshals the timekeepers, sign–on ladies and Paul for taking the photos. The tea and buns at the end were much appreciated.
