It’s been a remarkable season for Banbridge CC member Mark Downey.  Few however would have been brave enough to imagine the likelihood of the 21 year old Dromore man end the year as ranked number 1 in the world.

Following the recent track World Cup in Poland over the weekend the official UCI rankings were released today with Mark Downey topping the table in the Points Race discipline while also leading Ireland to the number 2 ranked nation.  The signs were certainly there at the start of the year when Mark was on a fantastic winning streak in the World Cups, winning the Points Race in the Netherlands and Columbia on his way to winning the overall World Cup.  He also won and also the Madison event at LA in USA after coming second in the Columbia World Cup along with his partner Felix English.

While on paper it would appear his stand out performances were in the track events, his top 10 placing at the U23 Road Race World Championship in Bergen, Norway confirmed his potential as a real world class prospect as a future road professional.

We at Banbridge CC would like to congratulate Mark on this significant milestone, wish him an enjoyable off season and look forward to seeing what 2018 and beyond holds for him.
