It’s about this time of year that special breed of club cyclist, The Time Trialist, starts to get very twitchy. The new season is around the corner, and they can’t wait to get out on the open road to see if all the hard work and training over the winter months is going to pay dividends. Banbridge CC is blessed with a wealth of TT talent and over the next few weeks we’ll introduce you to each of them and in doing so shine a light into their plans for 2023.

First up is Erwin McKee.

Many of you will be familiar with Erwin’s exploits on the TT bike. Over the last few seasons.  He has been topping the time sheets on a regular basis at events all over the country. He was only too happy to answer our questions.

Time Training Since: 2014

TT Rig & Setup: Giant Trinity. Decked out with Di2 and a 60t front ring. Disc is a Mavic Comete and the front wheel is a FLO 90mm. Cockpit is Aerocoach.

Helmet of Choice: Met Drone. Although always looking for marginal gains so wouldn’t rule out one of the new space age helmets currently doing the rounds on the World Tour!

Favourite Course: Newry > Warrenpoint Carriageway. That’s where I gained my PB.

Favourite TT Distance: 10 miles

Personal Best For a 10: 19.18 (Now that’s quick!!  It was also a BCC Club record at the time, beating a 28 year old record held by club and Irish cycling legend Tommy Evans)

TT Bling in The Trophy Cabinet: (At this point we had to tell him to be brief!!!). Just some of his recent accolades include;

Ernie Magwood Super Six Series – M40 Champion 2021/2022

Ulster 10 Mile M40 Champion 2022

National Time Trial Series M40 Champion 2022

Goals for 2023 Season:

Big changes this year for me with work so time limited but the key goals will be targeting the Ulster M40 titles at 10/25/50 miles plus The Ernie Magwood Super Six M40 category. All of this topped off with a podium at M40 nationals would be nice- but I might need to train a bit to do all that. Bigger goal is to enjoy the TT scene with the great bunch of lads we have in the club.

Do you have any speed tips you’d like to share with your fellow testers?

Consistency, position, power – all in that order.

The all-important question final question. Shaved legs, Yes or No?

Yes!

Best of luck with the new season Erwin and thanks for being a sport!
