Merchants of Speed – John Irvine

John is another ex-Cornerstone Cycling Club rider who in recent times has joined the ranks of Banbridge Cycling Club.  A very capable cyclist John mixes things up a bit and combines his Time Trialling exploits with Road Racing.  He had a very successful season last year and there is no reason to suspect he won’t have another one this season.

Time Trailing Since:  John has been riding for six years and time trialling for the last two of these.

Tell us about your TT rig setup!  What ya riding?

A BCC spec Giant Trinity – an ex TJ Wright machine!  (Things are getting serious John).

What is your helmet of choice?  Have you splashed out (or would you) on one of the new space age aero concepts that are starting to appear on the scene?

Met Drone

Favourite TT Course and why?

The Warrenpoint Carriageway course – this is where I gained by pb.

Favourite TT Distance

10 miles

Personal Best Time for a 10?

22.22 (only 7 seconds slower that your mate TJ I see.  It will be interesting to watch the competition between you two this season).

Have you got any TT bling in the trophy cabinet?  If so what have you got?

A despondent John tells me when it comes to TT’s it’s an empty cabinet in the Ervine household.  (Although I’m sure there must be something in there.  Badminton Trophy from primary school perhaps?)

What are your goal for the 2023 season?

Just to beat my pb.

Do you have any speed tips you’d like to share with your fellow testers?

Don’t crash into the back of someone on the carriageway!  (A reference to an unfortunate accident John had late last season.  (Thankfully, the only thing damaged was his pride……..AND A NEW FLIPPING TOP OF THE RANGE TELEPHONICA TECH EMBLAZONED SKIN SUIT).  Don’t worry John I know a man that can sort you out with a new one!

The all-important final question.  Shaved legs, Yes or No? Yes, all day long.

Whether its road racing or TT’s one things for sure and that is John will be smiling come the end of the race.  Best of luck for 2023 John.  TJ also wishes you well but hopes that you don’t catch him!
