Riley Smith has claimed the 2024 Gilchrist Cup after an aggressive night of racing alongside fellow U16 Banbridge CC member Adam Matthews. The two youth riders attacked early in the 6-lap Tandragee 100 circuit race, sharing the workload to gain a strong advantage over the hard chasing group 3 and scratch group. Both riders managed to remain clear until the final lap when Ulster M40 Champion Aaron Parks bridged the gap, however it was the younger Riley Smith who managed to claim the victory from Parks and Matthews who completed the podium.
The Gilchrist Cup was promoted as part of the Banbridge Inter-Club Race League, and was the final road race event promoted as part of the popular league for 2024.
The strong performance from both Riley and Adam bodes well ahead of a busy weekend for the youth riders who will be competing at the Ulster 3-Day International Youth Tour. Adam will be racing for Cycleology RT, while Riley will be racing in his home Banbridge CC colours. We wish both riders the very best of luck ahead of the event.
